Greetings SEMBBers!Well, the Browns won this past Sunday giving us some early holiday cheer for a change. Granted, the Raiders are arguably a team with more issues and dysfunctionality than the Browns, so the “odds” favored the Browns — even if the betting odds didn’t. Now the Browns are 3-8 with six more games left in the season.
However, this Sunday will be a much more difficult test when the 8-4 49ers come to the stadium. More thought to come below.
Now, before I continue, on behalf of all the officers of the club I want to wish all of you a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving holiday!
A BROWNS WIN Sadly, a Browns win has become a rare occurrence these past few years, so I relish it when it does happen. And the win against the Raiders was entertaining and enjoyable. – How much can be said about the Defensive performance? Recording 10 sacks (three by Garrett), the Defense pretty much dominated the Raider’s O-line, limiting the run game to 60 yards and holding Geno Smith to 208 yards total passing. What’s interesting is the Las Vegas dominated in time of possession, first downs and total plays. Despite those stats, the could only generate 10 points, a testament to the Defense’s tenacity. Was it perfect, no. But I’ll take this imperfect performance all day long if it results in a win. – Offensively, I finally saw more creativity in play design and calling this game than I have seen all season. Sanders did a decent job running the offense, though some excellent field position starts certainly didn’t hurt him. Despite the one dumb throw for an interception, he made mostly smart decisions. And, I will freely admit that scrambling 52-yard pass to Isaiah Bond was a thing of beauty. I also liked the well executed wildcat plays with Judkins and the gutsy, fighting-for-every yard runs after catch by Harold Fannin Jr. Oh, and I have to mention that beautiful Screen pass and 66-yard TD run by Dylan Sampson in the 4th quarter.
Like I said earlier, very enjoyable and entertaining. For a change.
MYLES GARRETT AND THE ROOKIES Myles Garrett is a machine! Nine tackles/assists and three sacks for the game. He’s now at 18 sacks for the season (a new club record) and continues to be on pace to break the NFL single season record. As I mentioned in an earlier email, he is well worth the money being paid him with his contract extension! He needs just five sacks over the next six games to break the record, and with the talented and dangerous Browns’ defensive unit behind him he hopefully will get it done quickly.
But Garrett wasn’t the only star in this game. Most of the 2025 Rookie class showed some flashes of brilliance during this game.
Of course, let’s start with Quinshon Judkins–while he only racked up 47 yards for the game (out of a total of 65 yards rushing for the unit), his two TD’s out of the Wildcat sealed the deal for the Browns. I mentioned Fannin Jr. before, and he has been a warrior since the season began, always running hard and moving the ball he’s proven to be the workhorse tight end and a worthy successor to David Njoku. With that one run on the screen, Dylan Sampson showed the explosiveness that the Browns have been insisting was where when they drafted him. And free agent rookie Isaiah Bond certainly helped his cause with that 52 yard catch-and-run for a TD in the fourth. Both Gabriel and Sanders have shown flashes during this season, but the inconsistent play on offense certainly doesn’t help them. The two defensive rookies also continue to impress. While not called out a lot on the broadcast, Mason Graham stepped in from day one and has helps the D-line keep opposing runners generally stifled. And linebacker Carson Schwesinger–another day one starter–was all over the field making plays or creating havoc. He is one of the leading tacklers on the defensive unit.
All-in-all, This appears to be Andrew Berry’s best draft class in his career with the Browns.
HOSTING THE 49ERS As previously mentioned, The Browns are home to host a tough San Francisco team. Brock Purdy is coming off a win where he threw three interceptions. and interceptions have been a concern lately. Maybe it’s an opportunity for the secondary to shine? On the other hand, Shadeur Sanders will start Sunday, but will face a much tougher and more talented 49ers defense and I believe this will truly be the litmus test on his abilities.
We’re back to a 1 pm kickoff, so join us at the Den for the viewing. Let’s see if the Browns can carry the emotional momentum from last Sunday’s game into this one!
That’s all for now except, of course, always and forever…
GO BROWNS!!!
