Greetings SEMBBers! It’s Football Season again! Preseason kicks off tonight as the Browns are in Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars. For our new members–we do not, as a rule, have viewings for preseason games but you are of course welcome to go to one of our two viewing locations on your own to watch the games. The next three weeks are for the coaches the slim the roster down to the league recommended level so we will see a lot of players names come up during the next three games that will likely not be with the club at the season kickoff. OFFSEASON MOVES I’m sorry for not reaching out earlier this summer, but I wanted to wait until things settled down–my mistake! It appears the soap opera-like drama has come back to Cleveland with a vengeance. A bit of good news is that it looks like we may have improved the defense over last year (assuming everyone stays healthy). The bad news, well… I only have a few comments about the whole quarterback fiasco and will address them by the two key figures involved. Deshaun Watson: Talent-wise, I think there is little doubt that he is an upgrade over Baker Mayfield. How much of an upgrade remains to be seen (if ever). But the price tag to acquire him, to me, was way too much! Now, the signing itself has brought a lot of controversy because of the many allegations brought against Watson. Many fans across the nation were offended that the Browns would sign him, prompting many to cancel their season tickets. I fully understand their feelings, but to sever ties with a club over one person to me is a bit much. We all know players come and go and whether or not Watson stays with the Browns (or is eve allowed to play) still needs to be played out. Time will eventually show us whether he is the team’s savior or just another serial offender. For now, I will let things play (drag) out since there will be 52 other members of the team that we can all cheer for. Baker Mayfield: Honestly, the way Baker was treated by the Browns was shameful. I honestly believe that it boiled down to the fact that Coach Stefanski never really liked him (why else would the coach allow an injured starting quarterback continue to play with a significant injury that messed up his mechanics?). I could come up with several more points on this, but I’ll leave it at one. Granted, Mayfield did himself no favors by 1. insisting on continuing to play; and 2. making some ill-advised comments via social media in the offseason. Both sides share blame in the melodrama that developed after last season ended. Now Baker’s at Carolina and I wish him nothing but the best for his career. It’s time to move on and focus on the present, warts and all. VIEWING LOCATIONS I guess the best I can say is what’s old is new again. We have a new viewing location for the West side, but it was a location we had a few years back — The Sports Den Northville. They now have a smaller room that we will be using to view games. Here’s the pertinent information: The Sports Den Northville 133 W Main St, Northville, MI 48167 (248) 347-5993 northvillesportsden.com For the Northeast side, we’ll be back at Club 11 in Roseville. The location information is as follows: Club 11 16315 E 11 Mile Rd, Roseville, MI 48066 (586) 778-2063A FEW FINAL NOTES:Membership information will be sent out in my next email, dues will remain the same $10 for a single, $15 for a family.I’m always looking for volunteers to help host viewings, if interested please email me back.
