Week 6: Opening Comments; Vote on Charities; Billy Ball Comes To Town

Greetings SEMBBers!
A few quick grumbles:The Browns are 2-3; the ‘Captain Obvious’ shoulda/woulda comment is they could be 5-0. those three losses were at a COMBINED margin of six points–close losses. Unfortunately, as the old saying goes–close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.I think the lion’s share of the blame rests firmly on Joe Woods’ shoulders. His game planning, game coaching and philosophy just aren’t going to cut it. Injuries aside, I honestly don’t think he is utilizing the talent we have in the defensive squad anywhere near effectively. The constant soft coverage and zone scheme continues to allow opponents to hit receivers (primarily tight ends) over the middle, where they’re able to turn it upfield for substantial gains. And when Clowney and Garrett are being double teamed I’ve rarely seen any creative adjustment to put pressure on the QB. Honestly, we need a new DC.OK, I’m also going to mention a worrying trend I see with Jacoby Brissett. For most of the game he manages the offense well. I particularly like his ability to gain extra yards an QB sneaks. But, in the three losses we’ve had, in the fourth quarter –when driving for a potential game tieing or winning score he has thrown and interception in each game that has–in the first two losses–resulted in sealing the loss. Last week’s game was almost the same but for the bone headed call by the Charger’s head coach that resulted in them turning over the ball on downs and giving us one last chance. Of course, we all know what happened. Finally, I’m a little concerned that Cade York is developing the yips. What should have been the winning field goal last week went wide right, and earlier he missed a chip shot field goal as well.OK. enough of that.

OK, I NEED YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM OUR FUNDRAISING
As I mentioned a few weeks back, we will have a major fundraising push this year for some local women’s shelters. Currently, club members have suggested the following organizations:Turning Point in Macomb County (https://turningpointmacomb.org/North/EastFirst Step in Wayne County (https://www.firststep-mi.org/West/SouthGrace Centers of Hope in Pontiac (https://gracecentersofhope.org/North/EastHaven of Oakland County (https://www.haven-oakland.org/North/EastPaula’s House in Monroe (https://paulashouse.squarespace.com/West/SouthWe will start raising funds shortly–primarily through an online memorabilia auction that I will open up not only to Club members, but to other Browns Backers clubs as well–should they decide to pass on the info to their members. What I need from all of you is direction on how we will distribute what we raise. The questions are simple:Do we split it equally among the five charities listed above?Do we choose a couple locations–one East/North and one West/South and split the proceeds between the two. You will need to vote for two. So, reply back to this email at your convenience with your decision and thoughts. If you opt for the latter decision, please also include your two choices–one North/East, one West/South.

BILLY BALL COMES TO CLEVELAND
This Sunday, the 2-3 Browns host Bill Belichick and the 2-3 New England Patriots. It’s still a toss up whether the Pats will have Mac jones back under center or if they will have to again start rookie Bailey Zappe. They also have several players banged up and questionable for Sunday. Of course, we will be down Jadaveon Clowney and Denzel Ward; and we have our fair share of walking wounded–although most are listed as probable at this time.

Kickoff is at 1 pm. Dave T. will be hosting the viewing and I hope that those of us who won’t be at the game will come to the Sports Den in Northville to view the game–the CBS affiliate in Detroit will be broadcasting the Tampa Bay/Baltimore game at this time slot.

I understand everyone’s frustration with the team, but we would appreciate it if you could come to the Den to watch the game with us–last week’s attendance was a bit low even for a home game. We have the benefit of a separate room in which to watch the games–your continued attendance is crucial for us to keep that privilege. Thanks!

One final thing–I apologize since I should have mentioned this after week 1: the Den automatically adds a gratuity to the bill so be aware when you are settling up at the end of the game. I take complete blame for not mentioning this earlier and apologize for any confusion caused.

That’s it for this week except, of course…GO BROWNS!!!
