Week 18: A Win At Washington; Season’s End In Pukesburg

Greetings SEMBBers!
I hope everyone had a happy New Year’s celebration and survived it relatively unscathed! Welcome to 2023!

So, watching last Sunday’s win prompted a few of us to ask the question–where the hell was this team on Christmas Eve?!?A WIN IN WASHINGTON
So, a schizophrenic first half for the Browns–an anemic, struggling offense that only generated three points; but a fine first quarter defensive effort with two interceptions. We also questioned Stefanski taking the penalty on the field goal (and taking the points off the board) and ultimately failing to punch it in on fourth and  goal. What was more worrying was the half ending with a 21 play, 96 yard second quarter drive by Washington that ate up over 11 minutes of clock time and put the Commanders on top 7-3. I admit I started to get that sinking feeling because I saw Joe Woods put his secondary into zone coverage on that drive and thought to myself, here we go again!

Then came the second half…and a different Browns team. After receiving the second half kickoff, the Commanders went three and out and the Browns went to town. Three possessions, three touchdowns. Amari Cooper with two of them and over 100 yards receiving for the day. DPJ with the third TD. Chubb with over 100 yards for the day (and currently #2 on the NFL RB yardage leader board). The defense keeping Washington to only three points in the second half, adding another pick for the day and taking over on downs late in the game. (Interestingly enough, they didn’t play zone all the time. Hmmm.)Corey Bojorquez, while–yes–having to punt, did a masterful job placing two punts inside the five yard line, had a booming 64-yard punt and averaged over 46 yards a punt on his four punts. Oh, and he was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.Chase Winovich recording his first career sack.Oh and for those who are keeping tabs–Myles Garrett stands at 15 sacks for the season. He needs two more to break his single season record set last year and three to be the undisputed franchise sack leader (and potentially take the sack leader title away from Nick Bosa this year as well). This could be a huge game this Sunday for Myles as well as the rest of the Browns.A SEASON’S END IN PUKESBURG
So, that brings me to this Sunday’s game. The last one of the season. It is scheduled for a 1 pm. kickoff. And for the record, the Lions have been flexed to Sunday night so the Den will be fairly empty in the afternoon.

The Browns are playing for pride–OK, that’s Bull–the Browns are playing to spoil the Squeeler’s playoff hopes. If they beat them, Pukesburg is done, Mike Tomlin records his first losing season as the head coach of the gangrene and urine. To me that would be the sweetest of wines!

(For those of you relatively new to the club you have to understand that while I despise the Ratbirds and have disdain for the Bungles, I hold an unlimited supply of vitriol for that team from Western Pennsylvania. It is a loathing that has been ingrained into me from my youth and I have carried with me: refining it, honing it and molding and remolding it for decades. Every defeat at their hands galls me; any victory against them is an unimaginable delight. To put it simply, I HATE THE PUKESBURG SQUEELERS!)

OK, enough venting.

Anyway, it’s the last Browns game of the season. Yes, I know many (OK, most) of us have issues with one player in particular, but as I said before there are 52 other players on the team and I choose to root for them. I’d also like to end this season with a bang and encourage all members to come to the Northville Sports Den this Sunday at 1 pm to join me and watch the game and cheer on the Browns. One thing I would ask is to let me know by Friday afternoon if you plan on attending and how many will be in your party so that I can give the Den and idea on a head count.

That’s it for this week except…

  GO BROWNS!!!
